Although adorable to imagine, a Dutch auction does not include wooden shoes and tulips, however, I would never discourage you from using a Dutch theme for your next auction. It sounds cute and think of the cheese you could serve!

So what is a Dutch Auction? A Dutch auction turns what you think about fundraisers completely upside down. In a traditional bidding process, you start with the lowest price and then increase the price until one final bidder is successful. In a Dutch auction, you start high and go low.

So how does this work in practice? Let’s say your organization is hosting a fundraiser where a lot of sports enthusiasts will be in attendance and you have a Super Bowl game ball signed by 2016 Super Bowl champ Peyton Manning up for auction. This is a very rare item that is nearly impossible to acquire. In a Dutch auction, you start the bidding at the highest possible price that you can auction it, say $10,000. The next bid would be $9000, the one after that $8000 and so on. First person to raise their paddle is your winning bidder. If two people put their paddles up at the same time, the bidding begins go up until one donor drops out (traditional auction style).

Dutch Auctions are certainly a trend for 2017 because they are fairly rare in the Charity Fundraising Auction circuit and they create a lot of excitement in the room. While your donors support your organization, it’s important to remember that they support other organizations as well. And, many of these fundraisers have the same script and programming. By hosting a Dutch auction and being creative with your programming, you’ll be able to create a memorable event for your donors that will keep them engaged, excited, and more willing to give to your organization.

For the next few weeks, I will be sharing my Hot 10 fundraising trends of 2017. Check back here for 2017 Fundraising Trends - Exotic Travel and here for Theater Seating and here for Live Streaming Video.

If it’s not on Social Media, it didn’t happen. Social media is a 2017 trend that continues to grow every year. Boosting your social media presence should be your organization’s 2017 priority. If your organization is not engaging on social media, potential donors will view your organization as outdated. Make sure you’re on all of the platforms, understand their purpose and usefulness, and learn how to use them correctly. Don’t let fear or time hold your back. You CANNOT fall behind on this trend, as doing so will lead you to be so far behind that it will be almost impossible to catch-up.

Having an understanding of social media will help you build your donor base and showcase your accomplishments. While social media is widely used by millennials, it is also used by your donors who may be baby boomers and traditionalist. Donors want to be connected to you through pictures, videos, and updates. Make sure you take advantage of this 2017 trend and encourage your donors to like and share your content.

For the next few weeks, I will be sharing some trends I think will be popular in nonprofit fundraising in 2017. Check back here for 2017 Fundraising Event Trends - Exotic Travel and here for Theater Seating.

If your organization is not on a social media platforms that offers live streaming video, you should make that a priority in 2017. Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Periscope all offer live streaming. The live streaming trend is growing and you should be using this trend in your nonprofit fundraising marketing. Live streaming allows you to build a community of people connecting with, interacting with, and watching your organization even though they are not in the room. Here are some ways to use live streaming media to your advantage in 2017.

Show Off Your Work
Host a live streaming event where you show off what’s going on in your organization. If you’re a dog rescue, use Facebook Live to show off the dogs at the rescue playing with each other and your volunteers. It’s easy to highlight what you do as an organization and make people smile in the process.

Livestream Your Meetings
If you want people to learn more about the inner workings of your organization, livestream some of your meetings. Livestream your Board meeting or a committee meeting. You can livestream a one-on-one conversation with a donor and talk about why donating to your organization is so important. Make sure you’re only livestreaming information that is open to the public.

Livestream Your Event
Because you’re using technology like Givergy to give those who could not be at your event an opportunity to bid on your items, you should also use livestreaming platforms to broadcast your fundraising event. By using a site like Periscope, you can give your event a hashtag and let people both in your venue and outside your venue follow along.

Live Q&A
A great way to engage current and future donors is to host a live Q&A on Instagram Live. Anyone who watches your Instagram Live video will be able to respond to the Q&A in real time, asking additional questions and commenting on the dialogue.

2017 Fundraising Event Trends - Theatre Style Seating

For the next few weeks, I will be sharing some trends I think will be popular in nonprofit fundraising in 2017. Check back here for 2017 Fundraising Event Trends - Exotic Travel

In 2017, organizations will be more creative in how they host their annual galas and fundraising events. Donors are tired of the same style of event for every fundraiser they attend. Stand out from the crowd in 2017 by hosting a theatre style fundraiser.

At a theatre style fundraiser there is no formal dinner because there are no tables to sit down and eat. Instead, guests are treated to a long cocktail hour with heavy h'orderves. Guests stroll around the room, eating h'orderves, interacting with each other, and reading posters and materials about the organization. After the cocktail hour, guests are then invited to enter into a room with theatre style seating where the live auction will take place.

Organizations will host events with theatre seating because it is completely different from the other fundraisers that will be hosted in 2017. Theatre seating also keeps the audience captive and engaged. Everyone is facing the same way and the sightlines are great. With theatre seating all guests can see the on stage speakers and any videos you may show during the event.

Additionally, your program will be shorter if you adopt theatre seating. Everyone in the room is paying attention to the stage and they are not distracted with side conversations that you may see when the auction is held during a sit-down dinner. It also saves the organization money as you will not have the expense of dinner tables, chairs, linens, and centerpieces.

And last, a theatre styled fundraiser changes the energy of the room. If your past events have not been successful because of chatter amongst guests during your speakers or your videos, you may want to consider holding your 2017 fundraiser in a theatre style.
